- Is there anyone out there that can help me since USR won't seem to
- respond to my E-Mail and I'm at my wit's end... For the sake of
- completeness, I'm just going to copy the E-mail I sent to USR...
-
- My problems began with my entrance to the Internet.
-
- I have a Micron P-90 computer. With it, I purchased what I believe to
- be an ACER 28.8 voice/data/fax modem. There were no distinctive
- markings on it beyond having some Rockwell chips, so I'm not sure it
- was actually an Acer. However, this is how the scenario unfolded:
-
- I signed up with America Online. Often, when downloading large files
- but also at random times, I would find myself disconnected. I thought
- the problem was AOL so for that reason (and the cost), I switched to a
- local provider. This is Southwest Cyberport.
-
- The problem persisted. I was just disconnecting at random times. We
- went though some modification of the initialization strings and other
- attempts at fixes to the same end.
-
- They next referred me to a consultant who went through my system and
- made some changes to driver settings which appeared to help. However,
- while my connections appeared to be a little steadier, the problem
- persisted.
-
- I E-mailed the consultant and he told me that he did not trust any
- 28.8 voice/data/fax modem that didn't have a name brand on it and the
- only kind he would buy would be a U.S. Robotics.
-
- Not being sure that the modem was, in fact the problem (and not
- wanting to spend $200 for nothing) I borrowed a modem from work. I
- don't know what the brand is but it is a 28.8 voice/data model. Using
- the initialization, $modemsetup = "&F&C1&D2&K3&Q5\N3%C3S7=60S10=10",
- it works like a champ. No hangups with a steady 28.8 connection.
-
- I went out and purchased a U.S. Robotics 28.8 Sportster Vi internal.
- It will not work using the initialization string above. I can't even
- go off hook. However, using, $modemsetup = "&F1S32=4S56=128", it will
- go off hook and dial. I can login, check my mail, and go to Netscape
- for perhaps one minute. It then appears to disconnect (but doesn't
- actually) and the modem itself locks up. Trumpet shows comm errors
- FRAME AND BREAK. The only way I can disconnect is to pull the plug
- and the modem stays locked up (no response to AT commands from Windows
- Terminal) until I back out to the C prompt and turn the machine off.
- Unless I do this, it won't respond to anything in Trumpet. I am using
- Trumpet Winsock for Internet access, Eudora Pro for E-mail, and
- Netscape for browsing.
-
- Additionally, I have Bitware for Voice/fax/data. This was never a
- problem with my old modem, the borrowed modem doesn't have voice
- capabilities, but now, it won't work. When I call in, it will answer
- and hang up. I am perfectly able to use Street Smart software (for
- accessing my brokerage account with Charles Schwab) without any
- apparent problems. I have another package that accesses Fidelity
- Investments. This too, is not working. I can dial in but not
- connect. However, I think this is due to some initializations that
- need to be done so I won't call that a problem with the modem at this
- time.
-
- Here's my ATI responses which I can get before (but not after)
- accessing the internet:
